The proposed riverfront redevelopment for Bhagalpur spans approximately 2 km, from Pul Ghat to Mayaganj Ghat, and encompasses six existing ghats. This stretch features a backwater stream of the Ganga, which maintains a consistent water level year-round. However, during the rainy season, water levels can rise more than 10 meters, almost completely submerging the existing ghats. While these ghats are rich in religious and historical significance, with ancient temples and ritual platforms, they currently remain disconnected from the city center.
The new design aims to re-establish the city's connection with the Ganga by creating a direct urban corridor. This will involve linking all the ghats with a two-level walkway and revitalizing the existing riverside steps, temples, and ritual platforms. This will be accomplished by constructing a durable embankment with slopes reinforced by vegetation. The ultimate goal is to transform this currently neglected and unclean area into a safe, attractive, and well-lit public space. It will serve as a place for residents to perform rituals, socialize, relax, and enjoy the river.
