The Bhagalpur Riverfront Development is a major initiative under the Bhagalpur Smart City mission, aimed at transforming the Ganga riverfront from Barari Bridge Ghat to Mayaganj Ghat into an accessible and environmentally sensitive public space. The master plan focuses on creating a series of public spaces, promenades, and ghats with an emphasis on pedestrian connectivity and improved urban edges. A key environmental component of this project is the introduction of an integrated wastewater management system to treat the nine primary drains that currently flow into the river. The plan also includes relocating the Water Treatment Plant to enhance efficiency and establishing green buffer zones for natural filtration.

In addition to its environmental goals, the project is designed to create distinctive civic spaces along the riverfront. Sidhi Ghat will feature a Butterfly Station, a Temple Plaza, and a shaded cafeteria, while Pul Ghat will have dual-level promenades and an Interpretation Centre. Landscape architecture is central to the design, utilizing native plants and tree-lined avenues to create pleasant microclimates. The project is committed to sustainability and community well-being by ensuring barrier-free accessibility, preserving cultural heritage, and restoring the riverbank's ecology, providing spaces for community engagement.
